Retirement in Devon - Retirement
By Susan Kersley

Retirement is a time to get involved in new community activities. What does 'community' mean to you? The word can mean: all the people living in a specific locality; a specific locality including its inhabitants; a body of people having something in common such as religion, profession: a fellowship of interests.

The word community comes from similar roots as words such as 'communication' and 'communion'. All of these words indicate that the basis of a community is being able to communicate with each other about common issues and challenges. Being involved in some community is very important, even more so when you retire, in order to have a balanced life, when you no longer have the community from your workplace.

What you have to do is to decide what sort of community you are attracted to and then connect with them. How would you rate your involvement and fulfillment in any community? Perhaps you believe that you are not interested in community but think again.

Since community is about connection decide what would connect you with others. If you have a hobby or a special interest that you share with some but not with others, and you know how you feel when you meet someone who shares your interest, then you are recognizing the value of community. The connection may be face to face if you have a residents association , or you go to a gym or attend adult education classes. On the other hand it may be virtual via social networking on the internet. It may be through support groups who meet locally or n a forum or chat groups on-line or email groups.

Whatever your passion, your concerns, or your challenges it's useful to find others who share them in order to find encouragement, support and motivation.
